Dr Wolfram Weschenfelder

Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon

Dr Wolfram Weschenfelder is a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery with extensive clinical experience in orthopaedic oncology and complex trauma care. He is the head of the certified interdisciplinary Sarcoma Centre at Jena University Hospital, where patients with complex musculoskeletal tumours receive coordinated, multidisciplinary treatment.

After completing his medical degree and specialist training in Jena, Dr Weschenfelder gained international experience through a twelve-month fellowship in Orthopaedic Oncology in Adelaide, Australia. He has also served as a lecturer at the Ernst-Abbe University of Applied Sciences in Jena and continues to be actively involved in academic teaching at the Friedrich Schiller University.

His research focuses on the surgical management of bone tumours, reconstructive techniques following tumour resection, and the treatment of complex fractures. Dr Weschenfelder has authored numerous national and international publications and remains actively engaged in research and education.

He is dedicated to integrating advanced surgical techniques and the latest scientific evidence into personalised, high-quality care for each of his patients.

A web-based application is available to support the differential assessment of atypical lipomatous tumours (ALT) and lipomas, based on scientific data. The app is built upon a clinically and radiologically validated scoring system developed at Jena University Hospital. It enables a structured preoperative risk assessment and may assist in decision-making regarding further diagnostic evaluation.
